I lost my beloved father

After several days from being absent blogging I am back. Actually I am still not in good condition because my beloved father died last June 10. He got stroke last June 7. His brain stem blasted 8:30 in the morning in our store and he was sent to the nearest San Juan Medical Hospital. He was with mom when this unfortunate thing happened. When I learned about it I immediately travel to Manila from Montalban, Rizal to look after tatay (father). He was unconscious when I saw him lying in the hospital with these breathing machine and ECG monitor. I really can’t help but cried as I whisper words in his ear. I asked him to fight for his grandsons and granddaughters.

After his CT Scan he was transferred to St. Martin de Porres Charity Hospital. My elder sister has a doctor friend there and we wanted what really our father’s condition. It was late night of that Monday when we learned from that doctor that our father was “clinically dead.” I never thought that it will be that fast and still hopeful that he will recover from it. The world seems to tumble and so much tears have fallen. I can’t help but asked God why?

My heart and my mind are still in denial. I don’t know when I can be able to recover from the deep pain I had from losing my beloved father. But I am still trying to be strong for my family and for mom. I hope that God will give us enough strength to move on and that he let tatay visit us often.

Tatay wherever you are I wanted you to know that we love you so much and we miss you terribly.

• 62% of the respondents plan to buy more Store Brand products given the tough economy. I guess with the given economic crisis we still have now it is wiser to buy a certain product of same quality but at a lower price.
• Patrons of store brands are at all-time high with 57%. Consumers are patronizing Store Brand products more than national brands because they are getting the same but at a lower price.
• There are 43% of shoppers who are trying Store Brands for the first time who are also used to buy only national brands.
• Among those who switched to a Store Brand 97% of those are happy with their new choice.
• 49% shoppers who turned to Store Brands are satisfied with the price and quality comparing it to national brands.

This survey is really a very viable aspect to understand more how consumers behave, change their preferences and their satisfaction over the products. It gives businesses a clearer vision on how to market their product, the picture of competition and their performance in the market. Is Turkish flour carcinogenic?

I have seen on TV the news about this Turkish flour and of course I am worried not only for my family but for all the people who consume flour-based foods like bread and pasta. Reports came out that said flour contains “mycotoxins” and other attributes that cause cancer. Actually Senator Aquilino Pimentel Jr. is calling for a total ban on imports of Turkish flour citing certain tests made on the said flour in 2007 by leading Turkish Universities. It came out in the said tests that 81 percent of samples of flour taken were contaminated with OTA (Ochratoxin A).

However the Filipino-Chinese Bakery Association opposed the ban because this Turkish flour is cheaper by 100 pesos per sack as compared to regular flour. They wanted the authorities to prove the carcinogenic attributes of the said flour before they push through with the total ban.

I guess the Bureau of Food and Drugs or BFAD must do their job well on this matter because it is truly of public safety issue.

Jiaoli banned by FDA

There are three Chinese-made cosmetic products being banned by the Philippine health regulators because they were found to contain dangerous levels of mercury. The Food and Drug Administration or FDA tests of the creams, Jiaoli brand, found mercury levels exceeding the allowable limit which can clearly pose imminent danger of injury to the consuming public. Said agency will penalize shops found selling the said brand of products.

Kapamilya Shower Na!

A renowned broadcaster Ted Failon conceptualized the shower project called “Kapamilya Shower Na!” to give evacuees a much-needed comfort and hygiene in different evacuation centers who rarely have access to clean water. Most of the centers’ facilities are not capable to accommodate the personal hygiene needs of the people and the places are crowded with people, hot and dirty.

Before pursuing the shower project, Failon raised funds through his famous radio program “Tambalang Failon at Sanchez” for a portalet project. Portalets are much needed too in the evacuation centers because do their “call of nature” anywhere and dump it anywhere.
The first stop over of the shower project was the Ultra Stadium in Pasig City. Evacuees, mostly missed to bath a week or more, were all happy and surprised for this project. Read here for more stories.

WIC encourages breastfeeding

As a mother, I know how important breastfeeding is on my part and for my kids. It promotes health, helps to prevent disease and reduces health care and feeding cost. Breastfeeding is more beneficial than baby formula.

Recognizing the benefits of breastfeeding, experts and federal government encourage mothers to breastfeed. Aside from the fact that it is the best nutritional option, it is free and can save up to $2,000 a year from infant formula costs. WIC, a federal agency, has introduced a new package that encourages breastfeeding with the following options:

• For breastfeeding package, women will not receive any formula in exchange for food package.
• Partial breastfeed or formula feed will receive lesser formula to encourage them to breastfeed more.
• Parents using 100% formula mostly paid by WIC will now shoulder its cost on their own.

Breastfeeding may not sound that easy but WIC guidance recommends counseling to keep mothers continue breastfeeding. If mother decides to breastfeed partially, there are still options or ways to still save money on infant formula. A nutritionist in the name of Dr. Barbara Levine from Weill Cornell Medical College has to say on baby formula:

“In the United States there are no generic infant formulas. The truth is all infant formulas are subject to the same regulations governing manufacturing and ingredients as stipulated by the Infant Formula Act.” “Store-brand infant formulas sold at major retailers are therefore a premium nutritional substitute at a value price and meet the same exacting FDA nutritional requirements as all the major brands. The quality and safety of the manufacturing are also inspected in same way by the FDA.”

When it comes to our kids we think nothing but the best especially when it comes to long term benefits on health. Not all mothers are given the chance to breastfeed their baby due to few milk or health reason. But for other mothers who are fortunate to do so, do it to benefit you and your baby.
