Luzon July 16, 1990 earthquake

Monday, July 16, 1990, at around 4:26pm, the densely populated island of Luzon was shocked with a magnitude of 7.8 earthquake.

Looking back 25 years ago, I was a B.S. in Commerce freshman student of the University of Santo Tomas. I was in the 3rd floor of our building when the big quake took place. Blinds, chairs, tables and people were moving involuntarily. Classes were suspended and commuting was really terrible and walking was the best way to get home then.

It was in the news where I saw how devastating the July 16, 1990 earthquake was. Seeing those buildings crumpled, I can’t helped but thank God that it didn’t happened to the building where I was then because our school building was already old.

With the advisory of the PHIVOLCS about the coming of another big quake in Luzon, I just hope that people will really take seriously the necessary preparations needed to lessen the aftermath of the said “Big One.”

 

PHIVOLCS: Marikina West Valley fault riped

After the devastating earthquake in Japan, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or PHIVOLCS on Wednesday said that the Marikina West Valley fault line is ripe for movement because it has not moved for 200 years. The possibility of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake is not unlikely. The 7 cities that will suffer the most damage and casualties if a massive earthquake occurs at the West Valley fault are MARIKINA, QUEZON, PASIG, MAKATI, PATEROS, TAGUIG and MUNTINLUPA.

Seeing the pictures of the aftermath of this devastating 8.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan posted at Yahoo! News, I can’t help but feel so sad and be fear also for our country. But I know that as one nation Japan will rise again and be more ready with such occurrence. With the help of every nation around the world, I know our fellow Japanese brothers and sisters will be able to cope up with this tragic moment and stand up and rebuild a much stronger Japan.

Hazard mapping needed

What happened to Japan recently was really heart-breaking. But it is something every country must be ready to deal with anytime coz nothing and nobody can predict such occurrence and time is of the essence. In the Philippines, I hope the government will release the hazard mapping so that the people can make the necessary preparations.
The East and West Valley Fault has not been moving for 200 years, according to PHIVOLCS Director Renato Solidum. It runs from Bulacan area, Rodriguez (Quezon City), Marikina Area, Pasig, easternmost Makati, Taguig to Muntinlupa, San Pedro, Biñan to Calamba. Any earthquake is dangerous to any building or property situated on the top of the fault line so I guess the government will prioritize a campaign information about fault lines, drills and preparations.

8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan

My husband gave me a call around past 3pm and informed me of the devastating 8.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan. He also told me that a widespread tsunami warning was made for countries in the Pacific. Unfortunately, my husband was in Legaspi, Albay with an Alert Level 2 warning for tsunami. Right now I am still awake and keeping in touch with him. When I turned on the TV as well as the radio, I can’t help but felt gloomy as I watched a big body of water smashed a coastal in Japan. Lives and properties were hit by such a high level of tsunami.

With all these happenings around the world, let us all live with love and respect for one another from now on. Forget greed, anger, power, selfishness and the evil deeds. It is high time that we care for each other, work hand in hand for a better future, take good care of our nature and live a life pleasing to God. God help us all.

Kinsella & Utah Haiti Relief & Rescue Team

180 orphans and more than 200 injured people in Haiti earthquake were rescued and saved by UTAH HAITI RELIEF & RESCUE TEAM. This team is a group of businessmen living in the Philippines. They immediately went to the affected areas in Haiti after knowing the tragedy where they saved 180 orphans and directly brought them in the US Embassy at Sto. Domingo, Dominican Republic. These orphans will be taken to America and look for their new parents. They were able to help more than 200 injured people and the group even bought 3 helicopters to use in their rescue and relief operation in Haiti.

According to Natahn Kinsella, Chairman of PNI-KMPG (a call center company located in Manila), the group is composed of businessmen in Utah, USA and partners in business he established in the Philippines. Kinsella, his family and businessmen friends from the US are living in the Philippines for more than 7 years now. Kinsella said that they were forced to buy the 3 helicopters because they knew that it is the easiest way to transport the victims of the earthquake and in delivering the relief goods in Haiti.

More than 200 tons of relief goods were already been delivered by the group in the different areas in Haiti. Among the 180 orphans, more than 100 of those were given US Visa and the group will look for new parents of these orphans. Currently, the group is planning to buy more than 100 container vans to be given to the victims in Haiti to serve as their temporary homes.

Seeing the catastrophic aftermath of the earthquake by Kinsella and the UTAH RELIEF ORGANIZATION, they knew that whatever they have extended to the victims are not enough that is why they are thinking for a long-term and permanent solution that they can still extend to the victims.

Kinsella went back to the Philippines Monday morning aboard Philippine Airlines Flight PR 103.

7.0 Haiti quake

The horrific Haiti quake shocked the world as over 100,000 of people feared to be dead. A massive 7.0 earthquake stroke Haiti last Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) causing schools, offices, hospitals and other buildings to collapse leaving dead trapped from the ruins. The massive destruction in the city of Port-au-Prince resulted from immediate action from across the globe to provide help in searching for the survivors of the quake, as well as medicines and food.
